Researchers used decades of Landsat satellite imagery to find that emperor penguin colonies exhibit more resilience and flexibility in their breeding locations than previously understood.

The details
The SANAE colony returned to its original fast ice breeding ground by 2022 after a decade of movement. Fast ice has declined in West Antarctica and the Weddell Sea since 2016. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service listed emperor penguins as threatened in 2022.
