Android 17 introduces 4 new network security features
Android 17 is introducing four new network security features designed to protect network connections, defend against cellular vulnerabilities, and increase home network privacy.
Why it matters
These updates reduce the risk of phishing scams and unauthorized profiling by preventing attackers from intercepting web traffic or spying on devices within a home network.
The details
Certificate Transparency is enabled by default, requiring certificates to be logged in public registries. Android 17 is the first major mobile OS to enable broad ECH support. SMS blasters use portable hardware to force smartphones onto legacy 2G networks to bypass scam filters. Developers are encouraged to upgrade to OkHttp 5.5.0 to enable ECH.
