OpenAI expands initiatives to support journalism from classrooms to newsrooms
OpenAI is launching a multi-faceted initiative to support journalism, beginning with providing ChatGPT Edu subscriptions to graduate students and faculty at CUNY’S Newmark J-School and Northwestern University’s Medill School.
Why it matters
This provides future and current journalists with tools to analyze data and produce stories faster, helping the news industry adapt to technological changes.
The big picture
This expands on a trend of AI companies providing educational tools and training seen in previous partnerships between Google and Missouri, and Samsung and the Mark Cuban Foundation.
The details
OpenAI previously provided a 2023 grant to NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. The company also hosted trainings at conferences for Black, Hispanic, Asian American, and LGBTQ+ journalists and created the OpenAI Academy for News Organizations.
What's next
Additional phases are being developed to expand tools, training, and partnerships across the wider journalism industry.
