Ring introduces TAKE, setting a new industry standard for default encryption and control
Ring is introducing Throw Away the Key Encryption (TAKE), a new default video encryption standard. It is designed to give users more control over their video keys while maintaining access to intelligent cloud features.

Ring users will have stronger default privacy protections that prevent the company from permanently holding encryption keys, reducing the risk of unauthorized access without losing smart functionality.
The details
- Keys are temporarily held in a secure cloud enclave to power active intelligent features. - Only the user and their trusted Shared Users retain keys after Ring deletes them. - Users can manage encryption settings on a per-device basis via the Ring app. - E2EE is available for higher control but disables Shared Users and cloud-based features.
What's next
TAKE will roll out in phases starting in September until it becomes the default for all customers worldwide.
