The Open ASR Leaderboard Adds Its First Global South Language
Voice Arena and Hugging Face have added the Monsoon evaluation sets for Hindi and Indian English to the Open ASR Leaderboard. This initiative aims to measure speech recognition performance across diverse speaker demographics and regional accents.
Why it matters
This allows developers to identify and fix biases in speech recognition, ensuring technology works reliably for people regardless of their age, gender, or regional accent.
The details
The Indian English set covers all six regional zones, while Hindi is the first Indic language on the multilingual tab. To prevent over-optimization, the project uses both public splits for self-scoring and private splits withheld by Hugging Face. Recordings were captured using participants' own handsets in real-world acoustic environments rather than controlled studios.
What's next
The project provides a model for evaluating other languages that exhibit similar orthographic variations and diverse spoken dialects.
